The Wacky World of Horse Bloggers

When I started this blog I had some pretty simple goals.  No need to make any money or really market anything.  Basically, I wanted to have a long term training diary with video, so I could look back in more detail than possible with a journal type diary.  Having it be public was fine but building a readership was not super important.  My computer skills are pretty limited but the blogspot site is not really intimidating, and since I also enjoy writing, I thought it would be a fun exercise in creativity.  Training blog plus whatever strikes my fancy.  Pretty simple and hopefully, fun.

The real revelation came when I started to research other horse blogs for formatting, topics, and etc..  That is when the full diversity of the horse blogging world really hit me.  Who knew there were so many blogs out there and from such a wide range of horse people?  Some well written and quite a few not so much, but a little bit of something for everyone.  I had only really followed a couple of blogs before this including Fugly Horse of the Day in it's heyday and Behind the Bit.  When I really got out there looking for active blogs I found so many great and interesting blogs and a few blogs that frankly verged into a freak show/train wreck territory. A whole new world opened up to me and in addition to the benefit of having a video and written training record, I have found a whole group of bloggers that I really enjoy following.

Some of these bloggers are eerily similar in background to me and some of them are completely different but have such a wonderful writing voice and interesting topic choice that I have become a faithful reader.  A couple of blogs that I really enjoy have recently been exploring the hard loss of a loved one and the quality of the writing and the breadth of the emotion and healing has been something else.  Other blogs have touched on training issues, equipment selection, or horse management concerns that have been super timely.  The whole process of starting and maintaining a blog has been such a revelation and the added benefit of finding other horse blogs that I really truly enjoy reading has been a true pleasure.

  1. I follow so many blogs. It's a nice morning ritual: having tea and reading blogs to see what other horsey people are up to.

  2. Olivia, I have the same ritual except with a cup of decaf. I've really been surprised by how much I enjoy following certain blogs. Probably some of it is I'm immersed in the worlds of hockey and ballet for my kids and it's great to be connected with other people that have the same horse interests.

  3. I started blogging because I needed a way to connect with other horse people as a recent re-rider. I miss the old fugly (the whole snarky rider thing is not something I will spend time on now, ugh). I have made some wonderful connections and gotten to learn about all different corners of the horse world I wouldn't have had access to otherwise. It really is a great community.

  4. Sprinkler Bandit, I agree about the connection thing. Even though I have been riding all along, because I keep my horses on my farm and don't show much, it is a great feeling of community to find a whole host of people with the same obsessions and interests.
