Substitute the word horse for child and this is just about a perfect horse training principle. Sometimes our horses act out for no discernible reason and this is a great mindset to have when dealing with the fallout. Other times our horses are asked to do hard things that are at the edge of their competence and or training level, leading to a meltdown. Thinking of the horse struggling INSTEAD of misbehaving opens up a whole different way of reacting as a rider and trainer. It becomes less of a "me versus you" scenario and becomes a process where you are encouraging the horse to work through difficult situations. What do you think?
